Where is Amarante?

Amarante is a city located in the north of Portugal, bathed by the Tâmega river and surrounded by a rural and mountainous environment. Being recognized for its musical and pastry culture.

Famous points in Amarante

The best known church in the city of Amarante is the church of S.Gonçalo, a tourist attraction representing religious architecture, in these different styles; Renaissance, Mannerist, Baroque and "oitocentista". Its construction began in the 13th century and lasted until the 18th century. Nearby is the Ponte de S.Gonçalo called "ex-libris".

This being a statue located in the historic center of Amarante at the largest entrance to it, portraying the welcoming spirit
of the residents of Amarante. This 19th century public figure is linked to politics and enlightening minds.

Amarante is known for its convent sweets, the best known being: "Papos de anjo", "lérias","colhões de S.Gonçalo", among others. We can find these in any pastry shop in the center of Amarante, such as "Confeitaria da Ponte".
